Elderberry Exploration: Cuttings to Grow & Where to Find Wild Elder
Let's explore where elderberry plants grow wild, how to identify them & how to take an early Spring cutting to plant and grow your very own elderberry tree!
Kate Johnson
My name is Kate and I'm the mama behind Mama Bears Elderberries. I make elderberry syrups in Saint Leonard, Maryland using local ingredients like Apex apiaries raw wildflower honey, elderberries harvested locally in special batches and native locally grown aronia berries. These syrups can be found throughout Maryland stores now from Annapolis to North Beach to Baltimore to Frederick. I started digging up elderberry plants from roadside ditches over 10 years ago but then realized the ease and benefit to cuttings. I love to share the benefits of the elder plant with others and help them plant their own.

Chat & Chew Citchen Herbal Study
This class will be taught by Mama Ravin and her assistant Danielle Nanih Waiya. The class will focus on key plants that you can identify in your own backyard that are either edible and/or have medicinal or survival properties. After going over these key herbs we would love to show the students how to incorporate some of these survival herbs in simple herbal remedies and medicinal meals such as herbal infused maple syrup, wild greens salad, and our famous dandelion- black eyed peas soup! We typically incorporate this type of herbal study in our Herbal Walk & Talk program that we host every summer, bi-weekly, on the Detroit Riverwalk by way of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy as well as in our Chat & Chew vegan herbal cooking classes that we provide at low cost for our community.
Mama Ravin & Danielle of The Herbal Healing Hut
The Herbal Healing Hut was founded by Regina “Mama Ravin” Lawson, a respected elder in the community, in 1997. In the HHH we study, advocate, and preserve the herbal medicinal and dietary traditions of our Aboriginal ancestors. We carry this out in two programs: The Herbal Walk & Talk and the Chat & Chew Citchen cooking classes. The Herbal Walk & Talk, in particular, is our most popular program in which we study and identify plants/herbs and discuss the medicinal properties as well as survival uses. Afterwards we "chat & chew" over a vegan meal prepared by the elder. Dates and locations vary. The Herbal Healing Hut over the years has garnered the support of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Sierra Club, Detroit Outdoors, and others.

Carmen believes that everyone should have access to plant knowledge and medicine, and that it is through this journey that we can learn how to support ourselves and our community in healing. Ultimately, for Carmen, this work is about learning how to live in right relation with this earth and the beings that will be here for years to come.

Earth's Song
Created with the spirit of children in mind, this online class is an invitation for the whole family. A call to slow down, listen, awaken and nourish our sense of curiosity and connection to the more than human world. Through storytelling, nature play, song and creativity we will tap into a deeper inner knowing and wisdom of the Earth. These times are fertile, our world is changing before our eyes and more than ever we need to sharpen our senses and open to receive guidance from the more than human world. May it be so, so it is!
Areli Perez
Areli Mariposa is of the cloud people, Zapotec clan, native to the Northern Sierras of Oaxaca, Mexico. You can typically find her exploring the wonders of the Earth along with an entourage of children. For the past nine years, she has been working as nature-based educator for children and youth. Before this, she worked as a community organizer for a San Diego based non-profit addressing health disparities in marginalized communities of color along the border region of San Diego and Tijuana. After some years doing this work, she found herself depleted and frustrated by the bureaucracy that goes into policy work. By the grace of the great mother, she was called back home, to the Earth, to be held and nourished. In the soil, she found acceptance and appreciation for the mysteries of life and death. In the plants, she found the medicine to tend her body, mind and heart. In the more than human beings she found teachers of presence, compassion and unconditional love. In the cycles and rhythms of the natural world both within and externally, she found truth. Areli now dedicates her time to sharing the infinite wisdom of Nature. As an educator and holistic health practitioner, Areli is committed to elevating human consciousness and creating a more beautiful and loving world.
